Back by popular demand! Taught by Elaine Dykman. From NPR: "Ukrainians have an ancient springtime tradition of intricately decorating eggs. This art form, called pysanky, has taken on special meaning and urgency these past few years, due to the war in Ukraine. Now, experts and newcomers are sharing this art to raise money and good wishes for the Ukrainian people".
First, Elaine will explain some of the ancient history and symbolism behind pysanky making. Then she will explain how these real egg shells are prepared for decorating. Your first egg will have patterns pre-drawn and ready to wax. Next she will teach how to use the kistka tool and wax resist batik method. Lastly you will dye the egg multiple times and remove the wax. Students will make one egg with a set pattern, then can make a second egg with their own pattern.
From Elaine: There is a legend that there is a monster in chains, the personification of evil, in the Carpathian mountains of Ukraine. As long as pysanky are written, the world will exist. When many pysanky are written, the chains are tightened around the monster, keeping it at bay so that it doesn’t destroy the world. The chains on the monster stay tight and evil in the world is kept in check for another year. Let’s keep tightening the chains! Slava Ukraini!
Here are two videos that show you how pysankys are made:
