Torch fired enamel workshop
Sat. 11/13
1-4 pm
Youths welcome, age 15+
Perfect for holiday gifts, make several pairs to keep and give away. Learn the ancient craft of enameling glass on metal in a fun and creative atmosphere. Make one-of-a-kind elements to create several pairs of earrings, a penny bracelet, a pendant or more – only your imagination is the limit of what you can create during this 3 hour course! Using a butane torch, students will learn how easy it can be to create stunning designs by fusing colorful glass powders and other elements to copper. After the basics are covered, students will have plenty of time to experiment on their own designs, students will generally create a sufficient number of enameled elements for creation of multiple pieces of jewelry.
You will learn how to handle a butane torch safely and work area set-up, cleaning and preparation of the metal, sifting and fusing glass enamel powders, and well as various surface embellishment techniques such as color blending, use of glass seed beads and “whiskers”, use of stencils and rubber stamps for addition of shapes and interest, and the sgrafitto method of scratching a symbol or design in sifted glass powder.
Janet provides all tools and materials needed, including personal safety items, use of torches, firebrick, sifters and tripods, use of large color range of enamels, and selected copper blanks.
Students should tie back longer hair and avoid wearing a top with blousy sleeves, since we will be working with butane torches.
